‘a whirlpool in the river of becoming (that) pulls the emerging matter into its own rhythm’

Walter Benjamin

The two opposing spirals of marks, first going inwards, then pulling outwards represent the inhale and exhale of a breath towards a centre. This motion | rhythm eventually pulls the mind and all ‘emerging matter’ [thoughts and noise] towards it, towards that single point of focus inside yourself where the inhale becomes the exhale and the mind stills.

The marks are made using the very tip of a lit incense stick to prick holes into the rice paper. The form is drawn with voids. I like the idea that I am creating a form, which is based on the rhythm of breath, out of air.
